WiR Scenario 3: The Second Battle of the Fords of Isen

With the loss of Theodred, the defence of the fords has fallen to Erkenbrand, who has Grimbold defending the ford itself, amongst his men is Gaerwine, the surviving captain of the Westfold. Elfhelm patrols the Eastern side of the river expecting attack, which comes when a pack of warg riders and a unit of Dunlending horsemen attack. While their cavalry is tied up fighting off this assault, Grimbold comes under attack by an army of uruk-hai led by a captain named Gurluk and Dunlendings led by Thrydan Wolfsbane. Grimbold is isolated.

No previous scenarios influence this one.

We added a Dunlending chieftain to balance the adding of the Rohan Captain and for flavour.

The Second Battle of the Fords of Isen

Grimbold and Gaerwine both stand their ground on the ford prepared to meet the charge of Gurluk, the Uruk Capt leading the assault, Gorulf and Rond, a Dunlending Chieftain.

Shots are exchanged at the river as the Dunlending cavalry, led by Thrydan charges towards the left flank.

And to their right, the wargs come pelting in.

However, Elfhelm and his riders come to their aid! Grimbold and Gaerwine bravely step onto the opposite bank to meet their opponents.

However, they’re caught off guard as the uruks and dunlendings hit them faster than expected and they get no chance to throw their spears. In the blink of an eye, Gorulf has overpowered Gaerwine and slain him. His hopes of avenging his dead father chopped to pieces by dual wielded axes! Grimbold deflects Gurluks sword and narrowly misses the uruks neck with his back swing. Gurluk is out of fate.

While Thrydan slays two riders, they make up for it by taking out several of his horsemen!

Elfhelm calls a heroic combat and several of the warg riders are quickly slain.

As the Rohirrim brace against the onslaught, Gorulf calmly walks through the gap and starts hacking apart the rear. Rond enters the fray with a kill.

Thrydan finds himself in danger as the riders envelope him and his last two horsemen. As he fights for his life a sword sweeps across his thigh, but using his remaining might he overcomes his opponent and slays them!

A few riders remain behind to mop up the surviving warg riders but one mysterious orc with a dwarven shield continues to fight them off and kills a rider. Rohan is winning the cavalry skirmish!

However, the defence at the river is failing. Another severe blow is dealt as Gorulf with several Dunlendings surround Grimbold. Gorulf deals the death blow and a total of 11 wounds bring down the captain. Grimbold dies on the fords of the Isen!

The remaining evil cavalry attempt to hold back the riders from saving the fords.

The orc is finally knocked down and escapes the battle! Urug vows to meet the Rohirrim again!

Elfhelm charges into the river trying to save the battle as best he can!

On the Ford, Rond rushes out and faces the Rohan Captain. He manages to sweep Elfhelm off his horse with his axe! Some loyal men drag their captain away from the battle to safety.

With the defeat of Elfhelm, the little resolve the Rohirrim had left begins to crumble. They fall quickly to their overwhelming enemies.

The riders, in one last act of defiance, manage to dismount Thrydan!

The Rohirrim left over, are all slain by the numerous opponents.

The now unopposed Isengard forces pour across the Isen unchecked! They ravage the lands of Rohan. Gurluk returns to Isengard, where he is named the commander of Saruman’s army to besiege Helm’s Deep.

Thrydan’s thigh wound quickly becomes infected in the following days and he passes due to it. Gorulf becomes the new leader of the Dunlendings.

  1. Poor Grimbold. How is he going to make it to Pelennor when he is dead?
